If Chris Brown (who is, I might add, brilliant in his own way) tried to do 'Closer,' it might well have been a total album-track, rather than a rather ace single. Not unpleasantly, though, I ought to emphasise rather, it gives the song a few new levels that it wouldn't have with any other singer. He's really ace at writing epicly heartbroken masterpieces, which translates rather strangely here. The pulse of the song, combined with the dichotomy between the shiny, sexy synths and Ne-Yo's mournful singing means it maintains the tragic air of most of his work. Terrible metaphors thought up at 3am during a heatwave aside, 'Closer' definitely does fit into the 'dancefloor tearjerkers' category*, for some reason, despite nothing being particularly sad in the lyrics. Although he's under her spell, this isn't a happy love song, there's something a little tragic about proceedings as though this is all doomed from the offset and Ne-Yo's just a moth battering himself on a particularly wonderful lightbulb. No word on which producers he's worked with, but it's probably the same n***as that did his last two albums.Dancier though 'Closer' may be, if you're envisioning vworp, vThe vocals also don't differ too dramatically from Ne-Yo's previous releases mournful, half-balladic murmured longing. Ne-Yo's third studio album Year of the gentleman is slated for a June release. It's not like he doesn't have the talent. Because I can't be dealing with hearing another album of mediocre songs about the same subject matter of: There's this girl.ooooooo, she's got a spell on me.ooooooo, I can't stop thinking about her, she's like a drug. I hope "Closer" isn't a sign of what to expect from his new album. Then he dropped the mediocre Because of you and now this "Closer" crap, along with all of the rubbish he's written with Stargate in between. His debut album In my own words was brilliant: one of the most polished and thoroughly enjoyable albums I'd heard in some time. Everything else is boring and this certainly is not lead single material. The only thing I like about this song is the guitar. My guess is that Ne-Yo recorded this shit right after he heard how Janet laid it down on "Rock with U" and thought "Shit! I gotta hop on that euro pop, gay club bandwagon too!" The only thing is that Janet's shit was hot, Ne-Yo's is not.
